Naive

Alongside the more realistic forms of painting and drawing I have always been fascinated by what some call naive art. I am not the only one who find childrens drawings and paintings fascinating, and as I have travelled across the globe I have seen work that explores colour and drawing  in so many different ways. Contemporary art has brilliantly challenged the myth that everything needs to be drawn in accurate perspective. Not only does this give a particular point of view it can become obsessed with the appearance of reality rather than its truth.

Forbidden Zone

Richard lived in Famagusta, Cyprus 50 years ago. No one has lived there since then. He has recently been able to revisit the deserted streets to draw and paint.

Studio work

These large scale works reflect on the experience of revisiting the Forbidden Zone.

Where I lived

This is the flat we rented. It has stood empty, quietly disintegrating, for 50 years.

In this series of naive paintings cityscape, landscape and imaginative worlds are explored.

The Forbidden Zone

This large work created on the back wall of the studio was made from drawings made on location.
