In 2006 Richard completed a practice based phd that explored the possibilities of digital intervention in a traditional painting practice.
Although this mainly reaffirmed his commitment to painting and drawing it did provide some interesting experimentation. the more succesful results were achieved by taking highly sophisticated programmes and using them in very basic ways.
Richard lived in Famagusta, Cyprus 50 years ago. No one has lived there since then. He has recently been able to revisit the deserted streets to draw and paint.
These large scale works reflect on the experience of revisiting the Forbidden Zone.
This is the flat we rented. It has stood empty, quietly disintegrating, for 50 years.
Using the mouse as a drawing tool and forgoing sophisiticated drawing pads lead to free intuitive drawing which countered the apparent logic and structure of digital imaging.
By using digital photographs and combining these with simple drawings it became possible to create graffiti like images where images, colours and words collide.
The final work could be a projection, or simply a print. The print could then be reworked physically and then rescanned and reworked on the computer allowing for endless experimentation.
This large work created on the back wall of the studio was made from drawings made on location.
